About Production Engineering (PEN)

PEN works on improving the developer experience - we’re trying to make the developer’s life easier by providing reliable monitoring of the running services and keeping everything we do well documented. We also keep an eye on our infrastructure and tools related to Observability. PEN helps smoothen the continuous delivery process.

This is tempting, but not forget the main part: we are responsible for our incident management process. If there’s a production issue, we must handle it properly. All teams have their own schedules, and we are responsible for OpsGenie we are helping them to have good alerts and correct routing. If there’s a security incident, we need to be sure that the Security team is paged. PEN team is on top of the whole incident workflow - from the initial alert through the impact analysis and customer response to creating a Postmortem.

Our range is wide, so we learn new things every day - which is the cool part about being a PEN.

We cover these areas:

  • Observability (our tools running in EKS and external as Datadog, Honeycomb, Sentry)
  • Continues Delivery process (GitOps, Rollout strategies, Canary, Blue-Green deployments)
  • Blueprints for microservices (Kotlin, Ruby, Node.js)
  • Incident management process (tools, training, documentation)
  • Platform Health (SLI, SLO, Error budgets)
  • Service Maturity (Service catalog, developer experience for creating new microservices)

Our Tech Stack

You’ll work with the following frameworks, tools, and languages:

  • Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, Github, Github Actions
  • Languages: Ruby, Kotlin, TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Go
  • Databases: PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, Redis
  • Observability: Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry, Honeycomb, AWS Cloudwatch, Open Telemetry
  • OnCall: OpsGenie, Rootly, Slack, Zoom

On a typical day you will ...

  • Implement, maintain, and consult on the observability and monitoring framework that supports the needs of multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Manage the Event and Operations Escalation Management policies in OpsGenie
  • Working on growing platform developer portal using Backstage.io, implementing our services into the portal, and improve DX for developers
  • Continue evolving monitoring tooling toward a standards-based self-service, automated platform. Improving our microservices blueprints to support this.
  • Grow and evangelize the capabilities of the observability platform.

About you

We’re looking for someone with the following skills and qualities:

  • 2+ years of programming in any language and willingness to learn and work with new ones (Python, Golang, Kotlin, Node.JS, Ruby)
  • Genuine love for creating documentation
  • Excited to help improve observability across the whole ProductBoard
  • Good knowledge of Linux environment
  • Troubleshooting skills - ability to debug issues with a disk, network, app performance, and similar
  • Excited to learn new things and driven to improve and develop yourself continuously
  • Strong drive to dig deep into problems and the ability to explore various approaches
  • Experience with or open to working in a remote team
  • Able to win a debate on tabs vs. spaces conducted entirely in English
