Director of Engineering

Lead fast-growing product teams with dozens of engineers. Empower, mentor, and further develop the talents of our engineering culture. Develop a healthy and robust engineering organization where people love to work. As someone who understands that success is a team sport, you’re personally invested and dedicated to everyone’s personal growth.

The focus of your group will be product platform and cross-team collaboration features in Productboard. Our roadmap involves re-designing our information architecture and introducing a workspaces concept, building out our real-time editor, collaboration enablers like notifications and permissions and ensuring Productboard is well connected to other systems our customers use.

On a typical day, you will …

  • Lead 3-4 Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers heading one of our Tribes, typically consisting of 20-30 engineers
  • Coach, mentor and develop your managers, empower and support your technical leaders
  • Your peers will be a Director of Product and Design Manager and together you will be representing your tribe and driving its planning, prioritization and execution based on company objectives
  • Maintain a healthy, collaborative culture built on top of our company values
  • Be responsible for hiring top engineers and engineering managers
  • We don’t expect you to write or review code regularly. If that is something you’ll miss, this role may not be for you.

About you

We’re looking for someone with the following skills and qualities:

  • Experienced "leader of leaders" who knows how to support a scaling engineering organization
  • A strong technical background, ideally building complex SaaS products
  • Experience with leading engineering teams—ideally from a startup or a scaling company
  • Seasoned at building processes from the ground up rather than just maintaining an already stabilized mature environment
  • A coach and a talent magnet. You empower people to do the best work
  • A strong personal brand in the tech community is a clear plus
  • Fluency in English—our team consists of 14+ nationalities

Bonus points:

  • Experience with building products used by large enterprise organizations with high expectations regarding availability, security and scalability
  • Experience with building cross-cutting concerns, such as modular or plugin architectures, enablement for permissions, notifications, localization

What should you expect in interviews?

  • Providing examples of talent you’ve hired and talent you’ve seen grow under your leadership
  • Understanding how your teams make technical and architectural decisions and what is the delegation and responsibility structure of your previous teams. In both areas, understanding what are the pros and cons of the structure you chose
  • A high-level systems design interview, understanding how you think about trade-offs when it comes to technical and architectural decisions
  • Describing scenarios when you’ve resolved conflicts, set up clear responsibilities and goals, describing how you measure and understand if your teams are on track
  • Your approach to tracking team and individual performance and how Engineering Managers are supported when doing the same

You can look forward to the following benefits:

You'll join a diverse and talented team, with plenty of opportunities for personal growth, impact, and learning.
